Premature Ejaculation: Why You’re Cumming Too Quickly

Dr. Andrea Yarbrough, DPT

To understand Premature Ejacluation, you must first understand how your penis works. To achieve a healthy erection, multiple systems have to be on point.

1. Muscular: The pelvic floor muscles are essential in erections and ejaculating. They help produce fulfilling orgasms, strong contractions, and expel semen. It’s just as important to know how to lengthen these muscles as it is to contract them.

2. Neurological: The brain is super powerful in getting you hard and keeping you hard. There are neurochemicals that are vital in achieving and maintaining your erection.

3. Vascular: Your penis is made up of spongy tissue to allow blood to fill up the penis = erection and to drain after ejaculation. Having good flow = good hard ons. Optimal cardiovascular health is important for pelvic health.

4. Hormones: Just being knowledgeable that testosterone and other hormones make a difference in your performance in the bedroom, is important.

Moving from an erection to ejaculation to the refractory period, involves a lot of players and they must be on the same team.

I’m sure most of you have been in a situation in which you weren’t ready to ejaculate and that may have embarrassed you or made you upset.

Medically defined, premature ejaculation is being overly sensitive to stimulation resulting in ejaculation at less than 1-2 minutes from insertion.

Premature ejaculation is 100% fixable! YAY! So, what can you do?

1. Know your anatomy. Knowing what your pelvic floor muscles feel like contracted and relaxed is vital in coordination of these fine muscles. The key is knowing how to let these muscles go.

a. Start by standing in front of a mirror to look at your private bits. Take a deep breath and notice what your genitals are doing. On the next exhale, tighten as if you were holding in a fart or urine. On the exhale, you should see your penis shorten and the testicles lift. As you inhale, you should see the muscles let go, soften, and descend.

b. Make sure you’re not holding your breath, clenching your glute muscles, or over gripping the abdominals. It’s very subtle.

c. Practice this awareness throughout the day in multiple positions (because sex isn’t always performed while standing).

2. Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques to get out of the fight or flight mode. Be fully present while performing. Less commotion in the brain will influence the penis greatly.

3. Desensitizing the ejaculatory reflex. What is that?

a. Either by yourself or with your partner, get your penis erect. Once erect, grab the tip of the penis with your thumb and index finger and squeeze for 3-4 seconds and release. Wait 15-30 seconds to re-stimulate the penis again. It’s common to lose some of the erection at this point. Keep practicing this technique several times and then introduce it with sexual activity (masturbation, intercourse, oral, etc)

b. This technique takes practice to get in tune with your sensations and timing to know when to take a break or rev it up.

As upsetting as premature ejaculation can be, know that you’re not alone. If these techniques don’t work, find a pelvic floor therapist that can help you. I’m located in Tampa Bay, FL and provide virtual sessions online for anyone, anywhere.
